ADD A FESTIVE TOUCH TO YOUR HOME WITH THIS STARBURST CHRISTMAS PILLOW COVER PATTERN – SIMPLE, STYLISH, AND PERFECT FOR THE SEASON!
The Starburst Christmas pillow cover pattern is my very first holiday-themed pillow design, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. It’s bright, bold, and festive – and best of all, it’s much easier to make than it looks!
I originally created this pattern to add a little colour and cheer to our dark grey couch, and I’m thrilled with how it instantly made the space feel cozy and ready for Christmas. Once I started playing with layout ideas, the Starburst design came together beautifully!
If you’re anything like me, you absolutely love quilting patterns that look far more complex than they really are. Starburst fits this to a tee. Made with HSTs, or Half Square Triangles, this pattern is all about the placement. You can easily create a completely different design by rotating your blocks.
I truly believe that quilting projects should be fun, regardless of your skill level or the size of your project. You can make this pillow cover using as little as two fabrics or as many as you want. The sample that I show below uses seven fabrics for the pillow front plus an eighth fabric for the binding.
Plus, this Starburst pattern would also make a cute table topper or wall hanging!

Fabrics Required
To bring this Christmas pillow cover to life, I used fabrics from a Fat Quarter Bundle of SnowKissed by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics. Of course, you can choose any of your favourite holiday fabrics for this project!
Whichever fabrics you choose, you will need only fat quarters for the pillow front. You can choose to use yardage or mismatched fat quarters for the backing.
FABRIC + NOTIONS FOR EVERY PROJECT
From charm packs and jelly rolls to rulers and thread, Fat Quarter Shop is packed with everything a quilter or sewist could need. It’s one of my first stops when planning a project.
Quilting Tools
Every great quilt starts with great tools. You will need the following:
- Rotary cutter and mat – You can absolutely use a good pair of scissors, but I do find that you get the most accurate cuts using a rotary cutter.
- Fusible Batting – for the back side of the pillow front
- Quilting Ruler

- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
- Pins or clips
- Fabric marker
- Spray starch
To get the most accurate squares for your pillow cover, you can use the Accuquilt cutting system! Cut up to six layers at a time and get perfectly even squares. Be sure to check out my Criss Cross Christmas Quilt video to see the Accuquilt in action!
