AS THE DAYS GET A LITTLE LONGER AND A LITTLE WARMER, IT’S TIME TO REFRESH OUR DECOR! CHECK OUT THIS QUICK AND EASY SPRING DECOR DIY PROJECT FOR YOUR HOME!
Welcome, March! And all the fun decorating that comes along with a change in season! Of course, we’ve already gone from Christmas to Valentine’s Day, but I find that seasonal decor is a little longer lasting and can be a whole lot more fun! I hit up the dollar stores and my stash of Chalk Couture over the weekend and came up with a super-cute tutorial for quick and easy Spring decor to make for your home!
What you’ll need for this easy Spring decor project
Dollar stores are such a great resource for all things crafty – usually. I was fortunate over the past weekend to find some gems! I’m including a list of items that I used, along with some Amazon links, in case you either don’t have access to a dollar store, or you simply can’t find what you need:
- Wood Cutting Board – you can use any size, but mine is approximately 12″ from top to bottom and 6″ wide at the base
- Wired Ribbon – any colour you like,
- Artificial Cotton Flowers and/or embellishments
- Hot glue gun
- Scissors
- Chalk Couture Paste and Transfer – I used French Country Minis and Sage Paste
What You’ll Do
This is such a quick and easy project! Here are the steps I used:
The Cutting Board
Putting your design onto your cutting board could NOT be easier! I chose the adorable Cafe Organic transfer from my French Country Minis:
Be sure to read How to Get Started with Chalk Couture: Easy DIY Home Decor for a full tutorial on how to apply the transfers and paste!
Once you’ve placed your design, set the cutting board aside and create your bow.
The Bow
Start by cutting 5 strips of ribbon as follows:
- 8″ – 3 strips
- 6″ – 1 strip
- 4″ – 1 strip
Fold each of the 8″ and 6″ strips in half and then in half again, as shown here:
Make a diagonal cut to create the points on the bow:
Layer the four strips you’ve just cut with the 6″ strip on top. You can set these aside for the moment.
Fold the 4″ strip into thirds length-wise. You can glue it in place or just fold it. Next, wrap the smallest strip around the middle of the longer strips, to create the centre of your bow. Secure the ends with hot glue and then attach it to the cutting board. Once the hot glue has cooled and your bow is secure, spread out the strips of ribbon to create the effect you like. I pulled 3 of the four strips in a downward direction and 1 upwards. I love the texture it created!
The Embellishment
You can have so much fun here! I chose to use some small white flowers that I had left from my Mickey Mouse Wreath, along with a small cotton bud and some Spanish moss. You can play with so many ideas here – cutouts, flowers, jewels – anything, really! Use your hot glue gun to secure your embellishments to your bow once you have decided on the placement.
Be sure to watch my YouTube video for a full demonstration! You’ll notice it’s a different design, but I followed the same method!
And that’s it! Wow! In about 15 minutes, you can make this super cute cutting board – that’s what I call quick and easy!
Spring decor you can make for your home is so much fun and can be done on a small or large budget! And when you add in Chalk Couture, the options are practically limitless. Some past favourites that I still use are this Spring Wreath and this Door Tag. Trust me when I say that you’ll often be reaching for your favourite Chalk Couture projects!
However you decide to decorate, Spring is a wonderful time for a whole-home refresh. And if you’re anything like me, you’ll start with your decor!
