If you are just getting set up, there are so many options out there for sewing machines. If you plan to move your machine around a lot, or if you plan to travel with it, you may want to look at a lightweight, compact sewing machine that comes with a hard case.
I have used Brother, Singer and Janome machines over the years and I’ve loved them all. Find a machine that suits your needs and your budget.

Unless you have a thread rack, you’ll likely be keeping spools of thread in your portable sewing room. It’s also handy to keep an assortment of sewing needles, a pincushion, clips and any other notions that you might use for your sewing projects.
