A jelly roll table runner is one of the quickest ways to add handmade style to your home — no matter the season. With pre-cut fabric strips and a simple design, this project is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a fast, satisfying make.
This particular table runner comes together in no time at all, but it still looks polished and pulled together. Let’s take a look at just how fun and easy it is to make your own jelly roll table runner.
Supplies for Jelly Roll Table Runner
You don’t need much to make this jelly roll table runner — just a few simple supplies. I always love a project that keeps things easy and uses what I already have on hand, and this one definitely fits the bill.
Here’s what you’ll need for your Christmas Table Runner:
- Fabric Jelly Roll – you can purchase a Jelly Roll pack or cut your own 2 ½-inch strips
- Coordinating backing and binding fabric
- Batting – use any kind of batting you like. Keep in mind that if this runner is going to be used in the dining room with hot dishes, use a batting that can withstand the heat, such as Insul-Brite. I’ve used a fusible batting for my runner, as it is purely decorative.
- Rotary cutter, mat and rulers
- Sewing Machine
- Thread, clips and other basic quilting notions

Instructions for a Jelly Roll Table Runner
Start by unrolling your Jelly Roll and choosing your strips. I chose to use only five strips, as I wanted to create a fairly small runner for a very shallow cabinet in our living room. Keep in mind that when using ¼-inch seams, a 2 ½-inch strip will measure 2 inches when finished.
Once you have chosen your strips, lay them out in the order that you like. Stitch all your strips together on the long edges. If you used five strips as I did, your sewn strips will measure approximately 42 inches in length by 10 ½ inches wide.
Now it’s time to cut. I cut 10-inch pieces from the sewn strip, and I was able to get four blocks by cutting 10 inches. This means that my finished runner will be roughly 10 inches wide by 40 inches long.
Turn your blocks sideways so that the strips are running vertically rather than horizontally as they were before we cut our blocks. Sew the right edge of the first block to the left edge of the second block, with right sides together, and continue for all four blocks. You will then have a continuous pattern throughout your runner.
By stitching your blocks end to end, you create a repeating pattern through your table runner.
Be sure to press all your seams. You can press in either direction or open, whichever you prefer.
Next, it’s time to add some batting, backing and quilting! I chose to use a light fusible batting, as this runner to simply decorative. The fusible batting allows you to do some quilting without having the top and batting move around. I then chose a backing fabric from the same collection and used a spray adhesive to hold it steady. I quilted by adding ¼-inch rows of stitching on each side of all the vertical seams.
Finally, choose your binding and finish however you prefer. And that’s it! You’re done!
