I’m so excited to introduce you to my latest design – the Hourglass Quilt Pattern! It’s timeless, elegant and simple, which is exactly how I like my quilts!
Plus, this pattern is layer cake friendly! And you know what that means. That’s right – way less cutting! Let’s take a closer look at this pattern.
Something I really love about the Hourglass quilt pattern is its simplicity. The quilt is made up entirely of hourglass blocks. And to help you, I’ve got a full tutorial on hourglass quilt blocks. They come together so easily!
Even though it looks complicated, this pattern is definitely beginner-friendly. Plus using layer cakes helps you be confident with the block sizing.
You can easily change the look of the quilt top by adding borders or turning your blocks. Please note that the pattern does not include any fabric requirements for borders, but it would be very easy to add them in.
The rows can be made using the layout I’ve chosen, which alternates the directions of the hourglass, or you can create your own pattern with them.

Fabrics Required
To make the Hourglass quilt pattern, you need 10-inch squares in contrasting print or colour. I recommend using layer cakes in both prints and background, but you absolutely could use all prints and create a very scrappy look! I made my quilt top using a combination of a layer cake and yardage cut into 10-inch squares.
You will also need batting, backing and binding and these measurements are included in the pattern.

Quilting Tools
Every great quilt starts with great tools. You will need the following:
- Rotary cutter and mat – You can absolutely use a good pair of scissors, but I do find that you get the most accurate cuts using a rotary cutter.
- Quilting Rulers – a square ruler will be very helpful for this pattern.
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
- Pins or clips
- Fabric marker
- Spray starch
Remember to keep yourself organized – keep all your quilting and sewing supplies in a Portable Sewing Room!
Be sure to take the time to square up your blocks as you work. This will help you to achieve nice crisp points.
BONUS – the Hourglass Pillow Pattern
Also included in this pattern is a coordinating throw pillow pattern. Use some of the same fabrics from your layer cake, or choose something totally different! You could create your blocks using solids that coordinate nicely with the prints you choose, which would be just lovely.
