WHEN IT COMES TO CHANGING OUT YOUR DECOR FOR THE SEASON, BE SURE TO START WITH A CLEAN SLATE! THESE FIVE QUICK AND EASY TIPS FOR ORGANIZING WILL TAKE YOU FROM SUMMER TO FALL IN THE EASIEST WAY POSSIBLE.
Decorating for each season is absolutely so much fun. But you can make it even MORE fun by starting with a clean house. I’ve got five quick and easy tips for organizing your home that will help make your housework load just a little lighter. Because once the work is done, it’s playtime! And by playtime, of course, I mean decorating.
Tip #1 – Declutter Your Space
I know – not exactly a “hack”, but it’s the number one way to get your housework more streamlined. When you have less, you organize less and you clean less. Or at least you clean easier and faster. If you need to move 50 things around to clean that area, it’s naturally going to take you longer than if you only have to move 5 things. It’s just simple math!

Tip #2 – Create a Routine
Having a routine for anything helps keep you on track. Think about it – if you want to lose weight, you track your eating and monitor your exercise. In essence, you create a routine. If you want to start your day out on the right foot every day, you create a morning routine. So to keep your home clean and organized, create a routine!
I have a routine for my laundry – you can check out my post on How to Keep Up with Laundry and get your own copy of my FREE printable laundry schedule!
One way to set up an easy routine is to predetermine what tasks will be done on what days. Most people vacuum once or twice per week, depending on the house and the traffic. So choose a set day. I like to vacuum on Fridays, before the weekend hits us. Because they go hand in hand for me, I also dust on Fridays. Create a schedule of tasks that need to be done daily, weekly and monthly and make a routine! Be sure to write down your own easy tips for organizing your home. The best way to create a routine is to write it down! You might even want to purchase a special notebook or journal to track your cleaning habits.
Tip #3 – Multi-Task
We all know that multitasking is not nearly as effective as we once thought, but when it comes to keeping your home organized and clean, it’s your best defence! For example, dusting and vacuuming. They do work together well. But also consider it in this way – doing the same task through multiple rooms. When I wipe down my kitchen counters with cleaner, it’s logical to carry on and wipe down the bathroom counters as well. I already have the cleaner and rags out, so I go ahead and get the job done in each room. The same goes for sweeping, wiping mirrors and so on.

Tip #4 – Keep Surfaces as Clear as Possible
When you look at a counter or shelf that is crammed full of stuff, it’s much harder to think about cleaning. Aim to clear your kitchen counters every day. But determine what “clear” means to you and your family. I know people that have absolutely NOTHING on their counters and they love it that way. I know other people that keep LOTS of items on display, and it works for them. In our house, we are the middle ground. I have my everyday cooking utensils in a canister on the counter, but unless we are using it, the toaster is always in the cupboard. We drink too much coffee to bother putting it away, but our coffee grinder and any other caffeine-related accessories are always out of sight. You need to find what makes the most sense for you, but try to keep as much space clear as you can.
You can also dedicate specific spaces to items you use often. I created a small coffee station in our last home since we were really short on counter space.
Tip #5 – Accept Imperfection
Messes happen. Clutter happens. The kitchen sometimes looks like a tornado ripped through it. It happens. That’s just life. And if you accept it, you’ll feel a lot less stressed when it comes to cleaning it. AND if you’ve been implementing the easy tips above, the mess likely isn’t as bad as it could be.
By implementing simple routines once you have purged your home of any truly unwanted clutter, you’ll find yourself spending less and less time on chores, and more time on the things that really matter!
