Lately, houseplants have become my favourite decorating tool.  I’m finding that the older I get, the more I’m drawn to the greenery and coziness that plants provide.  Plus, I’m FINALLY learning how to keep them alive!  So in celebration of my burgeoning collection of little green friends, I’m learning how to make quick and easy DIY planters for houseplants.  They deserve some fun new spaces to hang out in!

I started out by looking around our home to see what I had on hand that I could upcycle.  Countless plastic containers from yogurt and cream cheese, twine, pillar candle holders and a glue gun magically found their way to my craft table!  So without spending even a dime, I’ve created a super simple DIY planter to share with you.

What You’ll Need

As I said, I already had everything I needed on hand.  I pulled out a couple of other tools and I was good to go!

Here are the supplies you’ll need to gather up:

  • Plastic container – we love yogurt and cottage cheese and something told me to hang on to those plastic tubs!
  • Twine – any colour will do – I had a natural twine in my box of crafting goodies, so natural it is.
  • Pillar candle holder – this is totally optional.  Using differing heights of pillar candle holders can add a wonderful visual to your decor.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Craft scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marker to mark your cut line

What You’ll Do

Putting these planters together is so easy!  I’m not kidding – the hardest part is not burning your fingers on the hot glue.  Oops …

Step 1:  Determine the height of your planter

Decide how tall you would like your planter to be.  I like mine to be the same height as the plant pot, so I measured height, drew a line and cut my container down to size.  The yogurt container I used was a very light-weight plastic and cut very easily.

Step 2:  Add twine

Starting at the bottom edge of your plastic container, place a strip of hot glue and press in the twine.  It is particularly important that the bottom edge is well-glued, as you’ll be pressing down on it as you go.  After the glue has set for the first ring of twine, keep going!  Add glue in two or three spots for each loop.  There’s not really a right or wrong amount!

Step 3:  Finishing the top

Once you’ve wound your twine all the way up to the top, you’ll need to finish it off.  As you can see in the photo below, I’ve simply wrapped the twine all the way to the top of the container and then glued the ends inside.  Normally I wrap some tape around the ends of twine so it doesn’t unravel but not this time!  If you let the twine unwind slightly, it will lay flat inside the container and adhere better.

Gluing the ends flats prevents any extra bulk inside the pot.

Step 4:  Glue to pillar candle holder  (Optional)

I love how this little planter looks sitting on top of a wrought-iron pillar candle stand.  Luckily, I found this candle holder, along with two other sizes, at our local thrift store.  Keep your eyes out for items like these – you never know how you can use them!  It really adds something!  You can choose to glue your container to the stand, or if it’s not in a high traffic area, just set the planter in place.  I didn’t glue mine in place, because I like to change things up a little too often.

Something else you can do to add a little extra is some embellishment – ribbon, lace or smaller pieces of twine in a different colour would be so cute!  Of course, you can have so much fun with these planters and you could easily change them up for the seasons!  Picture a string of autumn leaves wrapped around your planter, or cute little hearts for Valentine’s Day.  The sky is the limit on these!

And there you have it!  Now YOU know how to make quick and easy DIY planters for houseplants as well!  How many will you be making?
