GIVE A CLASSIC BLOCK A MODERN TWIST WITH THIS CLEVER QUILTING TECHNIQUE!

If you’ve never tried making a disappearing pinwheel quilt block, you’re in for a treat. This block takes one of the most recognizable patterns in quilting — the simple pinwheel — and turns it into something fresh, fun and full of movement.

It’s the kind of block that makes you feel like a quilting magician, and it’s surprisingly easy to pull off.

What is a Disappearing Pinwheel Quilt Block?

The disappearing pinwheel block starts with a basic pinwheel — four half-square triangles arranged to create a spinning design. Once the block is assembled, it’s sliced up and rearranged into an entirely new layout that looks much more complicated than it actually is.

The result? A block with bold lines, eye-catching symmetry, and loads of personality.

This technique is great for beginners looking to try something new, and it’s also a go-to favourite when I want to use up precuts or stash fabric in a creative way.

Supplies You’ll Need

To make one disappearing pinwheel block, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Two 10-inch squares of fabric.  Contrasting prints or colours work best!

  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat

  • Quilting ruler

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron and pressing mat

You can scale your block up or down, but 10-inch squares are an easy place to start — especially if you have a stack of layer cakes waiting to be used!

Step 1: Create a Basic Pinwheel Block

Start by placing your two fabric squares right sides together.

Sew around all four outer edges with a ¼” seam allowance.

Using a rotary cutter, slice the square diagonally from corner to corner, forming an X. This will give you four half-square triangles.

Press the HSTs open, trim if needed, and arrange them into a classic pinwheel layout. Sew them together in pairs, then join the two rows. Give your finished pinwheel a good press.

At this point, your block should be squared up and ready for the next step.

Step 2: Slice the Block

Lay your pinwheel block flat on your cutting mat.

Using your quilting ruler, measure 1½” from each side of the centre horizontal and vertical seams. Make cuts in both directions, dividing the block into nine equal sections.

Take your time lining everything up — accurate cuts make all the difference when rearranging your pieces!

Step 3: Rearrange the Pieces

Here’s where the “disappearing” part happens.

Simply flip each of the middle-edge rectangles, like I’ve done in the image below.

You can also rotate each of the four corner squares if you want.

Leave the centre square as-is.

Once everything is in place, you’ll see a brand-new block emerge, completely transformed from the original pinwheel.

It’s always a little mind-blowing to see the difference!

Step 4: Reassemble the Block

Sew the nine segments back together in rows — three across, three down.

Once you’ve sewn the rows together, give your finished block one final press. That’s it — you’ve just made a disappearing pinwheel quilt block!

Ideas for Using This Block

These blocks are so versatile and can be used in all sorts of projects:

  • Table runners

  • Throw pillows

  • Baby quilts

  • Wall hangings

  • Full-sized quilts with repeated blocks

If you’re making a quilt, try mixing and matching different fabric pairs to create a scrappy, high-contrast effect. Or stick with solids and let the design itself shine.

Quilting Tips for Best Results

  • Choose two fabrics with strong contrast so the design really stands out.

  • Press your seams open or in opposing directions to avoid bulky intersections.

  • Use a rotating cutting mat if you have one — it helps with the slicing step.

  • Chain piece your pinwheel blocks if you’re making multiples — it speeds up the process.
