What You’ll Need to Make a Disappearing 4-Patch Pillow Cover
Below are the instructions to make one 18-inch pillow cover.
To get started, gather up the following:
- Fabrics of your choice – you’ll need four 10-inch squares
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Quilting ruler
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
- Pins or clips
- 18″ pillow form or insert
Top Tip: Use a layer cake! You only need four 10-inch squares, which means you can make a whole collection of matching items, like a throw or a table runner. Many layer cakes include duplicates, so pick coordinating prints from the same line for the best result.

Step-by-Step Instructions for a Disappearing 4-Patch Pillow Cover
Cut (2) 10″ squares from each of your chosen fabrics.
Arrange the squares into a four-patch. If you are using two fabrics, arrange them as Fabric 1: Top-left and bottom-right; and Fabric 2: Top-right and bottom-left.
Begin by arranging your four fabric squares in this two-by-two layout — alternating prints diagonally for contrast. This layout forms the foundation of the disappearing 4-patch block.
Stitch the top two squares together, then the bottom two. Press seams toward the darker fabric.
Sew the top and bottom pairs together, press the seams toward the darker fabric, and join the rows to complete your four-patch block. This is the base for the disappearing design.
Join the rows to complete the four-patch. Nest the centre seams and press again.
Using the centre seam lines as a guide, cut 2½” from each side of centre — vertically and horizontally — to create nine equal sections.
After stitching your four-patch block, cut 2½” from each side of the centre seam — both vertically and horizontally — to create nine equal sections for rearranging.
Rotate the middle strips:
- Leave the outer squares and centre intact
- Rotate the middle column and row segments to create the disappearing pattern
Stitch the sections together by columns, then by rows. Press well.
Finished disappearing 4-patch pillow front — pieced and ready for backing! This layout uses just four squares of fabric and creates a striking visual effect with minimal effort.
Create the Envelope Back
Cut two pieces from your backing fabric, each measuring 15″ x 18½”.
On one long edge of each piece (18½” side), fold under ½” twice and press. Topstitch the folded edge.
Place the pillow front right side up. Lay the two backing pieces on top, right sides down, with the finished edges overlapping in the middle. Align raw edges with the pillow front.
Pin or clip in place. Stitch all around with a ¼” seam allowance.
The envelope back is simple and secure — no zipper required! Just overlap the backing pieces as shown and stitch around the edges to finish your pillow.
Turn right side out, press, and insert your pillow form.
That’s it! A beautiful, beginner-friendly pillow cover that looks way more complicated than it actually is.
