What You’ll Need for Your Disappearing 4-Patch Pillow Cover
To get started, gather up the following:
- Fabrics of your choice – you will need two coordinating fabrics for this pillow cover
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Quilting Ruler
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
- Pins or clips
- Pillow form or insert
- Disappearing 4-Patch Pillow Cover Pattern – available in my shop!
My top tip for this pillow cover is to use a layer cake. You will only need 4 squares out of the pack, leaving plenty of fabric for a coordinating throw! Most layer cakes will have some fabrics duplicated in the pack, so I would choose those. Another tip is to use a rotary cutter, not scissors, and a rotating cutting mat would certainly come in handy for this project.

Instructions for the Disappearing 4-Patch Pillow Cover
To get started, cut (2) 10” squares from each of the two fabrics you have chosen.
Arrange your squares in one large square as follows:
Fabric 1 will be the top left and bottom right squares; Fabric 2 will be the top right and bottom left squares.
Stitch the top two squares together, followed by the bottom two. Press your seams towards the darker fabric. Stitch the top and bottom together, making sure you have nested the centre seams together, as shown below:
Press all seams.
Using the centre stitching lines as a guide, cut 2 ½” on each side of the centre, both vertical and horizontal, as shown below. Rotate the cut strips, leaving the outer squares and centre four-patch in place.
Stitch each column, followed by rows and press your seams.
To create the envelop backing, cut two pieces from your backing fabric measuring 15” x 18 ½”. On one backing piece, fold the long edge (the edge that measures 18 ½”) under ½” and press. Fold under ½” again and press. Topstitch along the edge of the fold. Repeat for the second backing piece. Place the pillow front right side up on your work surface and place both envelope pieces right sides down on top of the pillow front. The topstitched edges should overlap in the middle, with raw edges lined up with the pillow front.
Sew around the entire pillow with a ¼” seam, turn it right side out and press. Insert your pillow form and find a new home for your gorgeous disappearing 4-patch pillow cover!
As you can see with this quick and easy project, custom home decor does not have to be difficult or expensive. This simple but stunning pillow cover is the perfect project for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. I think I might just create a table runner to go with it, and maybe even a full-sized quilt! I can see the possibilities now. Stay tuned!
