ARE YOU LOOKING FOR EASY RECIPES TO KEEP YOU WARM THIS FALL? ADD SPICE TO ANY DISH WITH THIS DELICIOUS HOMEMADE CHILI SEASONING!
Well, Fall is upon us once again. And you know what that means! Yup, slow cooker season. In my opinion, nothing beats a big bowl of slow cooker chili, complete with homemade chili seasoning. It’s SO tasty, and I think it will become a favourite of yours!
If you’ve already tried it, you’ll know that I make use of my homemade chili seasoning.
Why make your own seasonings
Have you ever looked at the ingredients on some of those seasoning packets from the store? I have. Let me tell you, I can’t even pronounce some of those words, let alone know what they are. Not all of them, of course, but hey – if you can make it at home, and get just the taste you are looking for, why wouldn’t you want to make your own seasonings?
So often, we spend quite a bit of money on seasonings that aren’t quite to our taste. Don’t get me wrong, though – there are some AWESOME flavours out there! And some I simply won’t try to replicate. But if you’re looking for quick, easy and cost-effective spice blends, why not make your own.
You can also make your own dressings!
What you need to make Chili Seasoning
This blend of ingredients is one that I came up with after trying several recipes. While they were all tasty, none of them quite had the taste and flavour I was looking for. So after mixing and matching, adding and subtracting, I found exactly what I wanted.
This chili seasoning has some heat, but it isn’t over the top. I use a blend of chipotle chili powder, cumin, onion flakes, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper and Club House Tex Mex Seasoning. Yes, it’s true, the Tex Mex is a store-bought seasoning, but the ingredient list is decent, and it has the flavour I needed.
I played with the measurements a little, and I finally found the perfect blend of heat and flavour. After all, chili is NOT supposed to be for the faint of heart! That being said, you can easily adjust the amount of homemade chili seasoning that you use, to make sure everyone loves it.
How to Store Chili Seasoning
I keep a batch of this chili seasoning on hand at all times, since it’s so easy to make and it keeps nicely in a sealed container or glass jar. Like the spices you use to make it, this seasoning blend has a long shelf life. To determine how long it will last, just look at the expiration dates of your spices. Choose the first date of expiry and plan to use your chili seasoning by then. But if you’re anything like us, it won’t last that long because I use it in other dishes as well, besides my chili.
Just last week, I used a little sprinkle in our stuffed peppers, and YUMMMMM. It was a win! You could also sprinkle a little into the meat while you are making my awesome healthy and delicious Burger Bowls! I also use it as a key ingredient in my new favourite slow cooker soup.
The most important thing to remember – making ingredients at home does NOT need to be complicated, time-consuming or costly! When you make your own chili seasoning, or other seasonings or dressing, you get fresh, healthy ingredients. And that’s a win for everyone!
