WANT THE TASTE OF “THAT BURGER” BUT YOU WANT IT A LITTLE HEALTHIER? MAKE THIS DELICIOUS BURGER BOWL SALAD AND SATISFY YOUR BIG MAC ATTACK!
With summer on the way (I hope), it’s time. That’s right – salad time. And that means Burger Bowl Salad. Yes, you heard that right – Burger Bowl Salad. As in – Burger in a Bowl, but a SALAD. Better yet, delicious and healthy burger bowls! Basically, it’s a hamburger that has no bun. Just a whole lot of tasty goodness in a dish.
These days, it seems like I am constantly on the lookout for new, easy and healthy recipes. I don’t know about you, but there are so many amazing recipes out there, it makes my head spin! So I decided to look at it from a different angle. I thought about my favourite foods that are not so healthy, but oh so tasty and tried to lighten them up. And that’s where the burger bowl salad came from!
What is a Burger Bowl Salad?
Basically, a burger bowl salad is exactly what it sounds like – a deconstructed burger. You can easily make a salad out of nearly ANY burger – chicken, fish, beef – you name it!
A while back, my sister told me that she makes these great salads and even her teenage sons ask for them! Let me tell you, I made them the very next night for dinner, and they were a hit.
I don’t know about you, but every once in a while, I still get the “Big Mac Attack”. Remember those ads?? Yikes, I might be showing my age with that one. Anyway, I still love the taste of a Big Mac, but I do feel pretty yucky after eating one, plus you really can’t get a Big Mac without ordering those French fries, and then – well – I REALLY don’t feel well.
What I really love about these burger bowls is that they actually taste just like a Big Mac! Of course, they’re a lighter version without the bun. Plus, I use a homemade 1000 Island Dressing and real cheddar cheese, not processed. So delicious. And so easy to make too!
What You Need
These salads are as simple as they come. All you need is lettuce, ground beef, pickles, shredded cheese and the “secret sauce” – aka Thousand Island Dressing. Of course, you can get fancy with them, but why? They are perfection in their simplicity!
Putting Together Your Burger Bowls
Start out by browning your ground beef. As a side note – I usually buy big packages of ground beef from Costco. So I cook it all in my Instant Pot Duo, divide it into three or four containers, depending on the size of the package, and freeze it that way. Then I just have to defrost a container when I’m going to make a beef dish and season the meat in the frying pan. So brown (or defrost) your ground beef. I season mine with Montreal steak spice and a few drops of Worcestershire sauce.
While the meat is browning, you can prepare the rest of the ingredients. Start by creating a bed of shredded lettuce and add thinly sliced dill pickles and grated cheese. I use marble cheddar cheese, for both the flavour and texture. Of course, it’s personal taste, but a cheese that is too soft would turn a bit mushy in this salad. Top it off with your meat, and then spoon on some “secret sauce”, aka Thousand Island Dressing. Next, mix it all up, and there you have it – Burger Bowls. And for a little extra fun, serve these bowls with some homemade french fries!
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tsp minced onion
- 4 dill pickes
- 1 tsp Montreal steak spice
- 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
- 4 oz shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 head iceberg lettuce
- ½ cup Thousand Island Dressing
- Brown the ground beef in a medium frying pan with the Montreal steak spice and Worcestershire sauce.
- Shred or cut the head lettuce into bite-size pieces.
- Slice or dice the dill pickes. I like to slice them, just like you'd find on a Big Mac!
- Shred the cheddar cheese.
- Divide ingredients into 4 bowls, layering in whatever order you like best.
