QUICKLY CREATE BEAUTIFUL QUILT BLOCKS WITH THIS SIMPLE TECHNIQUE! LEARN HOW TO MAKE 4 HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES AT ONE TIME WITH THIS FAST, EASY, AND ACCURATE METHOD!

Half-square triangles (HSTs) are a quilter’s best friend and one of my absolute favourite blocks.  They’re versatile, simple, and perfect for endless designs. But let’s be honest. Making them one at a time can be tedious. That’s why I’m sharing one of my favourite time-saving methods – how to make four half-square triangles at once!

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned quilter, this technique is one that you’ll go to time and again. Let’s dive in!

Why Use the 4-at-a-Time HST Method?

This technique is perfect when you need multiple identical HSTs without the hassle of cutting and stitching each one separately. Here’s why it’s a must-know:

  • It’s faster than some other methods beause there is no need to draw diagonal lines!
  • This method is perfect for large quilt blocks.  It’s ideal when you need multiple matching HSTs for a cohesive design.

What You’ll Need

As with most projects, start by choosing your fabric.  Typically speaking, HSTs are made with two high-contrast fabrics or simply put, light and dark.  Be sure to dig into your stash, check out your local quilt shop or visit your favouriate online quilt shop like Fat Quarter Shop!

Next, make sure you have the essential quilting tools. Here is a list of what I like to have on hand when making any quilting project:

  • Rotary cutter and mat
  • Quilting Ruler
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Iron and ironing board or pressing mat
  • Pins or clips
  • Fabric marker

Better yet, just roll your Portable Sewing Room over to your work space and get started!

Not to worry, all the instructions are still listed below.

How to Make 4 Half-Square Triangles at Once

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

While these are (in my opinion) the fast Half Square Triangles to make, the math is the most complicated.  When making 4 HSTs at once, you’ll calculate your starting size from your unfinished block, rather than the finished.  But not to worry, my FREE downloadable chart has you covered for basic sizes!

But so you know, here is an example of the math:

If your finished block needs to be 4 inches, your unfinished block will be 4.5 inches and you will start with 7.25-inch squares.

The math:  4.5 / 0.64 = 7.03125. (round up to 7.25″)

Always round UP to the nearest quarter-inch to allow room for error.

If you want to calculate based on the FINISHED block size, simply add the half-inch to get the unfinished size, divide by 0.64 and round up.  So not complicated, actually, but still tricky!

Anyway – let’s get on to the sewing!

Step 2: Layer and Sew

Place your fabric squares right sides together.

Sew a ¼” seam all the way around the outer edges of the square.  Yes, all four sides!  No, don’t leave any opening!

Step 3: Cut into Triangles

Use your rotary cutter and ruler to cut the square diagonally twice (like an X).

These two cuts give you four Half-Square Triangles, just like that!

Step 4: Press and Trim

Press seams to the dark side or open, depending on your preference.  I prefer pressing to the darker fabrics, as I love when my blocks nest nicely together!

A note on pressing at this stage – you are now working on the bias.  Be sure you are PRESSING, not IRONING.  Too much pressure and movement can distort the shape of your blocks.

Trim each HST to the exact size you need.

Tips for Success

  • Use starch or a pressing spray – It keeps fabric crisp and prevents stretching.
  • Chain piece multiple sets – This speeds up the process even more!
  • Square up your HSTs – Even though this method is precise, trimming ensures perfect piecing.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a faster way to make half-square triangles, this 4-at-a-time method is a game-changer. It’s quick, efficient, and perfect for quilts that require lots of HSTs.
